CHAPTER THIRTY

THE ZONE

Switching the backpack to the conventional position, I started crawling towards the hacienda porch. Holding the Uzi ready in my left hand, I ignored the pain in my right. I was in the zone, blocking out all sensation of pain from my hand and ribs, a technique I learned from my martial arts training in Asia. I recited this in my head as it aided me in blocking the pain. Standing slowly, I surveyed the porch, checking for any signs of movement. Satisfied all the prone sicarios lying on the veranda were dead, I padded up to the open front door, a vast hardwood affair decorated Mexican style. Taking a furtive look inside, I saw a large living room filled with furniture with a sizeable fireplace to the rear. Satisfied the space was empty of people, I switched the backpack again, removing a flash-bang, so named because on detonating it emits a bright light and ear-piercing explosive sound intended to debilitate and disorientate all who are near it. Once the pin was pulled, and a count to three, I lobbed it towards the fireplace. It landed with a clatter on the hardwood floor. Before the detonation, I saw a man run from a dark alcove then stoop to collect the grenade. Another sicario, I thought as I ducked outside again.

The sicario threw the grenade through the open door, no doubt relieved to hear it explode harmlessly beyond the porch. From cover behind the door, I lay down a short burst from the Uzi, then removing another grenade from the backpack threw it inside after removing the pin. Another burst of fire from me ensured the hired killer stayed hidden inside the living room. See if you like this, amigo, I thought as the live grenade shattered into small sharp shrapnel fragments followed by an unholy scream. It’s time for me to introduce myself, I thought as I entered the room with Uzi ready.

With a roar, the Mexican killer upturned a sofa he had been sheltering behind, now torn to shreds by grenade shrapnel, and rushed me once I had taken a few steps inside the room. It was enough to surprise me. I was too slow in raising my Uzi but not too slow to release the backpack, leaving me free to fight unencumbered. Here we go again, I thought, just like slo-mo in a movie when it’s a fight to the death.

At that thought, I saw the sicario had only one arm. The left arm was a bloody stump with bloodstained shirt material hanging from it. Wounded animal, I thought. Again a fraction too late to react, I was winded as the sicario barged me to the floor, forcing me to lose my grip on the Uzi. The Mexican lay on top of me holding a long blade in his right hand, which he thrust towards my throat. Using all the strength in my leg muscles, I kicked and rolled over at the same time, forcing the sicario sideways and making him land onto his bloody stump.
